Winter Safety Tips and Guidelines
Many accidents and falls occur on
snow- and ice-covered roads and walkways.
Accidents and injuries increase
during the winter months.
Exposure to cold temperatures can
cause hypothermia and frostbite.
Following some simple safety guidelines
during the winter months can help prevent injuries and accidents.
Wear proper footwear.
Take shorter steps and walk at a
slower pace.
When sidewalks are not shoveled,
walk on the street against the traffic, close to the curb.
At night, wear reflective gear or
bright colors.
Wear sunglasses during a bright
sunny day.
Avoid bringing snow or ice into
the home as it will melt quickly and create a hazardous walking condition.
Remove snow and ice from walking
surfaces, or apply non-skid materials to increase traction.
Walkways and driveways should be
shoveled as soon as possible following a snowstorm.
If you are unable to shovel snow
from walkways and driveways, ask a family member or friend to do so,
to allow access in and out of your home.
Keep warm covering on your head.
Dress in layers, and be sure clothing
does not become wet.
Avoid contact with cold surfaces.
Wear wind-proof clothing.
Wear a scarf over your mouth and
nose.
Wear warm gloves, boots and headgear.
